Exmark Commercial 21

by Exmark on February 22, 2010, under Products

Hi, everyone. Tom Vachal here, principal design engineer for Exmark.

At Exmark, we’re constantly coming up with new ways of making our products even better, whether it’s through improving features on our already popular mowers or introducing new models that meet the specific needs of landscape pros. We just can’t help ourselves. For the past 18 months, I’ve had the pleasure of helping create the Commercial 21 and Commercial 21 Advantage Series – two new additions to our walk-behind line and a prime example of our obsession with delivering the very best to our customers.

Here are just a few of the features we’ve incorporated into the new Commercial 21 line:

  • Durable front height adjusters that eliminate the need for “pivot-style” adjusters
  • Single point rear height adjustment for quick changes
  • Easy on and off bag design that eliminates the need for levers and doors
  • New 5”-deep die-cast aluminum cutting deck for a precise Exmark cut
  • A choice of commercial-grade Honda & Kawasaki engines
  • 60 percent fewer parts

The Commercial 21s are available now. It’s definitely worth a trip to your local Exmark dealer.

I purchased my commercial 21 back in June and on October 23 the drive cable broke. I am still waiting for the part and was told by one dealer that there was an issue with the cable and they have come out with a heavier duty cable. I am wondering is Exmark if will replace the cable free of charge.
Has anyone else had this problem?

I am about to order a 21. I am concerned about what I am reading about drive belts, cables etc… Are these problems sorted out? Should I stay away from Exmark?

  • Exmark Expert

SharkRescue, the drive belt and engine brake cable issues have both been resolved. All products in the field were updated through a service campaign to address these issues, so you should be comfortable that you will not have similar issues. Thanks for commenting!

Thank You Exmark Expert. I also have a question about user engine throttle control for engine speed. What models of the X series with the Kawasaki KAI engine have throttle control? Is it the BBC model, or are they all governed for 2011? If so, why has the the throttle control been removed?

  • Exmark Expert

Only one of the Exmark Commercial 21’s have a throttle control for 2011 (The X-Series, zone-start Honda). The control was removed from the handle location to reduce complexity and eliminate the opportunity for cable failures. Last year, we built a few machines with a throttle control on the engine. But, our research with commercial operators suggested that, in general, customers were mowing at the highest engine speed all the time, and they did not frequently change engine speeds (even on the BBC machines).

I am considering the purchase of a new AS 21, but i am having trouble locating dealers in my area(Southern California). The locater on the web site only shows 3 at a time. Also when was the drive belt issue fixed? The last thing a business needs is down time.

I purchased a new commercial 21 with the BBC and Kawasaki motor in March-April of 2011 for my 1/4 acre lot. While there is much to love about this mower (speed, power, build), mulching is absolutely not one of them. If you only bag I can recommend this mower as it bags great, however if you plan to mulch at all, don’t even consider this mower. Even in dry grass it’ll pack the underside of the deck in a matter of minutes. I want this mower to work for me so bad, but I just can’t make it do so.

    Greg,
We are sorry to hear you’re having some challenges with the mulching on your Commercial 21. We think you’ll see much better mulching performance using our multi-purpose/mulch blade (part # 116-4500). If you’d like to discuss further, please contact your local dealer or give our Customer Service department a call at 1-800-667-5296.

My local dealer gave me one of the new blades that you recommended. I am extremely happy to report back that this blade makes all the difference in the world!! I couldn’t be happier! I just got through mowing some wet spring grass and didn’t have even the slightest issue. It’s the perfect blade for mulching. I’ll keep the original blade around for the rare occasion that I may bag, it definitely has more lift.

    Thanks!!!
